Performance Coach

£30,000+ per annum. Full-time, 40 hours per week

Overview

  • Location: Warrington, Cheshire - based at our Athlete Performance Centre, with some travel and remote working
  • Salary: £30,000+ per annum, dependent on experience
  • Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Reports to: Dr. Tom King, Founder

The role

You’ll coach professional and aspiring athletes, and you’ll do considerably more than coach.

In one week you might profile a footballer, adjust a programme after a match, take someone through the last phase of a rehab, and help develop cutting-edge sports tech through our sister company, Metrics.

We’re a small team, so what you do lands. You’ll own your athletes and make the calls, rather than deliver someone else’s plan.

What you’ll do

Coaching and athlete performance

  • Profile athletes, run performance testing, and track progress against it
  • Design and deliver individualised strength and conditioning programmes built around each athlete’s sport, season and club demands
  • Deliver one-to-one and small-group sessions in the gym and on the pitch
  • Support injured athletes through rehabilitation and return to performance, working alongside medical professionals
  • Adapt programmes as the data and the athlete’s season change

Managing athletes through the Framework

  • Run your athletes through KPI’s Athlete Performance Framework - Discovery, Support and Coaching
  • Periodise across macro, meso and micro cycles
  • Communicate with athletes, clubs, agents, parents and practitioners - a real part of the job, not an afterthought
  • Produce educational material that helps athletes understand their own performance
  • Help keep the day-to-day running of our services tight, which in a team this size is everyone’s job
  • Represent KPI on external visits and at workshops, presentations and events

Research and innovation

  • Contribute to applied research, testing and product validation with Metrics, our founder’s sports technology company
  • Help shape new products and services as they develop
  • Stay current with the literature and bring what matters into how we work

What you’ll need

Essential

  • MSc in Sport Science, Strength and Conditioning, or a related discipline
  • Five years or more in strength and conditioning or sports science
  • Experience in competitive or high-performance environments
  • A strong grounding in profiling, testing, monitoring and programme design
  • The ability to interpret performance data and explain what it means to an athlete
  • Experience with both youth and adult athletes
  • Enhanced DBS check and a valid first aid qualification, or willingness to obtain both
  • A full UK driving licence, or the means to travel to our Warrington centre

Desirable

  • PhD, or studying towards one
  • UKSCA, ASCA or NSCA accreditation
  • Experience in professional football, or in private performance environments
  • Rehabilitation and return-to-performance experience
  • Familiarity with force platforms, GPS, IMUs or force frames
  • Published or applied research, or experience delivering coach education
  • Leadership or staff management experience

What we offer

  • Career development across coaching, rehabilitation, research and sports technology
  • Exposure to professional and aspiring athletes across multiple sports
  • Internal and external CPD
  • 30 days’ paid annual leave, including bank holidays
  • Flexible working, on-site and remote
  • KPI clothing and uniform
  • On-site parking and a fully equipped performance facility
  • The chance to contribute to research and product development

About KPI

King Performance Ideology helps athletes maximise their performance through coaching, rehabilitation, education and athlete support. We work across sports and competitive levels, combining scientific research with practical coaching to build individualised programmes for athletes, clubs and organisations.

Our founder, Dr. Tom King, also runs Metrics, a separate company developing performance testing equipment and athlete monitoring tools. Working here means you can be part of that too - building the kit, not just using it.
